We have enjoyed reading the updates on your families. It makes us realize that we are just like everyone else; there is never enough time (or money) to accomplish the things we NEED to do and still fit in the things we WANT to do. I was scanning my computer trying to find last years letter and could only find unfinished documents! In fact, most of them stopped mid-sentence! I guess this is an indication that the above statement is true since the 2010 letter was never completed, much less sent!

I (Jerry) am still working for the Montana Department of Corrections. Most people do not realize what a difficult task it is to correct everyone else’s mistakes! (They should pay me a lot more.) Actually, I find it hard to believe that I have been supervising inmates and dealing with dairy cows at the Montana State Prison dairy farm for a full seven years. I am beginning to realize after training inmates to milk cows for that long that milking cows can actually be classified as punishment rather than vocation. However, I still like it as a vocation! It is amazing how many inmates leave prison only to reoffend and are soon contacting me to return to work at the dairy. It almost leads me to believe that milking cows in prison is easier than living on the outside.

Billye has been busier than she really wants to be with Montana Keepers. All I can say is she really loves to sew because she goes to the shop at 9:00 in the morning and works until 4 or 5; then often comes in and sews in the basement until 10:00. She has completed quilts for our two newest grandsons and is working on more. (More on that later.) The economy must be improving because she has been busier that ever in the shop. She would like to have her employees trained (and willing) so they can work and she can visit grandchildren but it hasn’t quite gotten to that point yet. It appears that this increase in business will continue well into the New Year.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 273px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-t42suwXRk_Y/TuzKaWorsqI/AAAAAAAAAWQ/vyyliIBxODw/s400/IMG_1409.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5687142983563719330" />
One of the two new grandsons is Carsten, born to Heidi and Brent on August 21, 2010. Carsten is now a very active 16 month old running and climbing around their home. He definitely keeps his mom, dad, and three sisters busy. We spent a few days helping Heidi and Brent move their home and family from Ashton, Idaho to Athol, Idaho when Brent accepted a new position with the USDA in early November. This was about a 500 mile move with all but about 150 miles of the road in Montana! They moved from Idaho to Idaho through Montana with the midpoint being our home in Deer Lodge.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-N7eepZjuB6s/TuzK74IKscI/AAAAAAAAAWc/HcsRWLSdWcw/s400/IMG_1410.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5687143559489827266" />
The other new grandson is Ian, born about 5 weeks early and just shy of 5 lbs. on November 18, 2010 to Derek and Alisha in Havre, Montana. Ian and his mom were treated to an air ambulance flight to the Great Falls NICU very soon after his birth where they spent the next two weeks getting him breathing and eating. Grandma Billye was able to be in Chinook with Reegan and Brennan during the last stressful week of Alisha’s pregnancy then brought R & B to Deer Lodge until Ian was discharged to go home to Chinook two weeks later. Derek shuffled between his job with Sangel in Chinook and driving to Great Falls during this time. We were able to go to Chinook for Ian’s baptism on December 18 then came back to Deer Lodge in time to travel to Belle Fourche to spend Christmas with Billye’s mother and some of her siblings. (Collectively, this is why the letters were dropped mid-sentence.)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 294px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1nJMmyQUyN0/TuzLP2USihI/AAAAAAAAAWo/z6JAtF9Y6Oc/s400/IMG_1419.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5687143902601185810" />
We enjoyed a great weekend in April when we joined most of my extended family for my nephew Eric and Alaine's wedding in Missoula. The next day we celebrated my mother’s somewhat belated 80th birthday party in St. Ignatius. All of my siblings and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren were there along with many old friends whom we had not seen for many years. It was a great weekend full of visiting and celebration.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TgMtiuDSHMY/TuzlkrtouBI/AAAAAAAAAX8/fgr73os-Kyw/s400/IMG_1131.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5687172847834282002" />

June saw the culmination of a three year struggle in Mansura and Francisco’s quest to adopt her sister’s two orphaned children in Tajikistan. Prior to their departure to bring 4 year old Ben, and 7 year old Sabrina, back to the USA Billye flew to Baltimore and brought their other children, Angelina, 3, and Samuel, 5, to Montana for two weeks since they could not accompany their parents on the overseas trip. Heidi and Alisha were able to bring their kids here during their visit. What an active week that was with nine children under 8 years old with only 3 or 4 adults to supervise them. Sammy and Angie had a great time in the Montana open space and really enjoyed getting acquainted, riding bikes, and playing in Grandma and Grandpa’s “park” with all of their Montana and Idaho cousins. It was definitely a culture shock in comparison to the buildings of Baltimore. Billye and I both were able to accompany them back to Baltimore and spent a few days getting to know Ben and Sabrina and hearing about Mansura and Francisco’s adventures in Central Asia. It was certainly an experience that they will never forget.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-er6af7JtuLQ/TuzkfyMQHBI/AAAAAAAAAXw/9n4MPDtHqGs/s400/IMG_1286.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5687171664162331666" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q5E9lWCXvNM/TuzLx6WT1EI/AAAAAAAAAW0/M3DXgRg8wlo/s400/IMG_1241.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5687144487798953026" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MfeIdgqsUCk/TuzLyFWi_5I/AAAAAAAAAXA/5Bao4E4yzqs/s400/IMG_1330.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5687144490752737170" />
Cort and Danita were in Deer Lodge for a few weeks in July and early August. Most of that time was spent helping Danita’s parents put a new roof on their home and garage and also helping us do a few little things at our place. It got them into the construction mood so when they returned to Nevada in early August they started a major remodel and addition project on their home. They are currently working with their “Early Construction Motif” but will take a break to visit us in Deer Lodge over Christmas.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 301px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qaURaFNEqOc/TuzMB2cj--I/AAAAAAAAAXM/W8v5kUxF5iY/s400/Cort%2Band%2BDanita.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5687144761629342690" />
Reed and Melissa will also join us in Deer Lodge for Christmas. They (and we) are anxiously awaiting the arrival of their first child due in early February. Reed is still a “certified John Deere Technician” with Triple W equipment and Melissa is attending the U of M working on some Pre-Med classes. They also have been busy redoing their home in preparation for their additional family member.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 352px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NG52nSRjrtY/TuzMRbcvotI/AAAAAAAAAXY/mF_Pp-1kwAM/s400/IMG_1408.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5687145029260255954" />

We enjoyed a great weekend with kids and grandkids in Yellowstone Park in August. A hike to Lone Star Geyser was enjoyed by all. If you are ever there, look it up and take the time to go. And it doesn’t matter how many little ones are around, that new one is the focus of attention. In August, we were blessed with our 8th grandchild. And what a blessing he is. Three big sisters love Carsten, as well as Mom and Dad and all the Grandparents. (Well, maybe the 2 year old feels a bit usurped, but she will get used to him being around!) It always amazes me that no matter what the situation, they are welcomed into the family and loved by all. That new child is a reason to rejoice!

And isn’t that the way it is in our Christian life? When we share our faith with those we know and love, whether family or friend, and one day that faith takes root in their lives, it is a time of rejoicing. There is comfort and peace in knowing that person will be looking to Jesus for their hope of eternal life. It is a reason to rejoice!

As Women in Mission, we are in the Word daily and we share our faith with others when we have the opportunity. We put our change in our Mite boxes and those mites add up to millions of dollars for Missions both locally and around the world. Those mites help bring the Word of God to those who need to hear the saving Word of the Gospel that brings them to faith in Christ. That is a reason to rejoice!

Carsten was baptized, brought into the family of God and given a new life in Christ. We, as members of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, have the opportunity to bring New Life in Christ to people we know and love and some we do not even know, but will someday in eternity. Now, that is a reason to rejoice!

Lift Up Your Eyes…..

Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12:1-3

During the last three days together we have joined together in Worship and Bible Study around our theme ‘Lift Up Your Eyes’. We looked up to Mount Sinai where the law was given. Then we looked up Mount Moriah and finally to Mount Calvary and to the cross of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and His saving work there. We have had some 'Eye Opening' exercises and we did some voting and the ‘ayes’ have it!

We heard ‘Mites in Action Speakers' Park and Johanna share the experiences they have had in their vocations as teacher and pastor, and despite the different cultures and sometimes difficult situations they remain Christ centered and cross focused.

We had the pleasure of a visit from Cecilia and Penny encouraging us to look foreword to the next National Convention in Peoria. President Jan has given us ideas to help us focus on being in the Word daily. Brook and Cindy shared a look back on the Portland convention and now they look forward to being a part of LWML. And we have been blessed to be able to look to President Shari to lead us through these days together.

As always, it has been a wonderful time together and a ‘mountain top experience.’ We will soon be going back to our homes, families and friends as well as the challenges and comforts of our everyday lives and back into the world. In this world we sometimes lose our focus. Sometimes things seem to get dim.

At times, we want something other than a cross. It’s amazing how easy it is to shove the cross of Jesus aside for “more important things,” “more relevant things,” “things that make a difference in my life.” We already know the old, old story, so why bother repeating it? We need to move on to bigger and better things, right?

These verses in Hebrews tell us something different. Faith is tunnel vision, narrow and focused. Like a marathon runner zeroing in on the finish line, straining forward, not looking down, or back, or to the side. You know what happens to runners who look anywhere but to the finish line? They trip, may fall, get out of their lane and pull up short of the finish.

“So, let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.” Look to Jesus, the One who died and rose again. Look to Jesus, the One who endured the cross for the forgiveness of your sins. Look to Jesus, the way a runner looks to the finish line, and don’t take the eyes of your faith off of Him. Put everything else in the periphery of your visual field; the center belongs to Jesus. And without Jesus in the center, nothing else will be in focus. Kinda like our new friend, Illinois Jones. After a weekend with us and hearing God’s Word, she has been transformed as she now looks to Christ for all her needs.

God is faithful. Christ has completed the race and one day, we too will cross the finish line and receive eternal glory with Christ. This prize that will not fade or spoil is ours. We will experience the many wonders of heaven for eternity because He has made us His own and we will see His glory with our own eyes for eternity. Let us ever ‘fix our eyes on Jesus’.

Dear Heavenly Father, You are the Author and Perfector of our faith. Sometimes we become complacent with these gifts. Thank you for keeping and strengthening us in that faith through the Bible Studies here this weekend. Thank you for the faithful brothers and sisters that we have enjoyed fellowship with these last few days. And thank you for the members of First Lutheran and their welcoming of all of us here. We ask that you will provide safe travel to all as we go back to our homes and family. Help us to always 'Lift our Eyes to You' to keep us steadfast in faith. In Jesus Name. Amen

The Work Continues

Here is where we finished up yesterday, before the rain.

The day starts early in the village. Two officials accompanied us to the village. Our group was the first group of foreigners to stay overnight in Loh Koh village. The government officials were there to make sure we were not there to cause a problem. It didn't take long for them to realize that we were there to get a job done. They saw what we were doing and were joining in and helped mix paint and paint. The village people were also very willing helpers. They were thrilled with learning how to paint. We were all a bit surprised that we were painting the Day Care pink, but that is the color they chose.

Only the foundation on the inside was painted.

With the help of so many, the fence was built all the way around the building and the painting and cleanup was complete before noon.

After lunch, the people of the village wanted to take us to the Kings Project, farther up the 'road' from the village. This is where the 'Hmong Four Wheeler' came into play. These vehicles are a very versatile mode of transportation. They are a way to transport people and produce. The front wheels can be traded out to cultivator wheels for the corn.

It was fun to sit in the drivers seat, but it was only pretend. Does the mud on the tires give you an idea of what was in store? Muddy it was! These amazing machines along with a very adept driver brought us through some mud we probably wouldn't attempt with a four wheel drive pickup. We passed rice paddies and corn fields.

We stopped along the way for a cool swim in a stream. As we approached the Project it began to rain. We had to leave the 4-wheelers at the bottom of the hill and walk the rest of the way. The Kings Project is designed to bring new sources of income to the Hmong villages. This project was started about a year ago. They are in the first year of growing coffee. Coffee produces in the third year.

  Once again, we were accompanied by the government officials, because no foreigners had been to the Kings Project. By now, they realized we were not a threat. They were taking pictures for us and getting into the picture with us and loving it. Before long they were asking Dang for reading material for themselves and to place in The Kings Project so they could learn more about what Christianity is all about. We came to encourage the Hmong and help out in their village and unbeknown to us, God opened doors to share the Gospel with others outside of the village.

When we arrived back at the village, we had the opportunity to see the kitchen and watch our host prepare the food. When the Hmong cook a chicken, they use the whole chicken, head, feet and all. Someone had told the cook that Americans do not usually eat the head and feet so, the gracious hostess took those out of the dish. The kitchen had a dirt floor and two wood burning cooking burners. Despite the lack of a modern kitchen that we are used to, the food was always wonderful and tasty. There was rice at every meal...breakfast, lunch and dinner.

As the meal was being prepared, other members of the team were out blowing bubbles with some of the children. Not everyone is willing to ride 2 hours in the back of a pickup over rough, muddy roads. Despite their shyness they loved to play games and laugh with us. They were all well behaved and respectful.

Dinner was served and we headed back to our cabin before it was dark. Night in the Hmong village is very dark. There are no street lights to light our path. The darkness eats up that little flashlight or headlamp you might have.

It wasn't long and people began to gather in our cabin for evening devotions. Tonight was a very special night in that a family of five were entering the Family of Faith in Baptism. As Pastor Suphan translated the devotion into Hmong, I watched the father of the family as he listened. The seriousness of the occasion was apparent on his face. God had brought all of them here and they were gladly receiving the gift God was giving them.

After the baptism, the family returned to their home with Pastor Suphan and removed all the idols. This had to be done in the cover of darkness so no one would see them. Now they have freedom in Christ and display a cross in their home as a reminder of that freedom.

What a beautiful testimony to all of us there that night to what God can do in the lives of those He calls by His Word and in Baptism. The adoption of this family into His family shows the power of His Word to give faith that can cross all barriers.

This village of about 1000 people now has over 50 Christians among them. This number will grow as time goes on, not because of anything we have done, but because God Himself is there in His Word. In fact, the Christians there are in the process of building a church, so they have a place to gather. The homes are too small for the number attending worship.

To God be the Glory.

The Work Begins--Day One

Upon arrival, we were greeted by an anxious group and we were ready to get busy with the work we came to do. The men went out to the forest, cut bamboo and used their machetes to cut the bamboo into slats for the fence. The machete is a versatile tool in the hands of these men. There are no power tools to build anything in this village.

Progress on the painting was going very well. They served some great food to some hungry workers. Rice is served at every meal along with lots of vegetable dishes with pork and chicken. Sometimes we prayed the blessing in Hmong, sometimes in Thai and sometimes in English.

Suphan, a Hmong pastor, accompanied us to the village and was a great help in communicating with the people. He spoke both Hmong and Thai so we had a three way translation many times. Suphan would translate to Thai and Dang would translate to English and the other way-English to Thai to Hmong. Suphan travels regularly to the Hmong villages to minister to the people there. Thailand is 90% Buddist. This is a huge barrier to Christianity. The important thing to the people of Thailand is to build relationships. And that is what we were doing in this village. It was amazing to see how God can work through a few people coming to help with an ordinary project. As mentioned before, the government officials accompanied us to the village. As time went on, they were very excited about what we were doing and even participated in the painting of the daycare.

As the base coat was completed, we moved to the fence. Dang and I make a pretty good team.

The people of the village were ready to jump in and help too. We stayed outside under the eves for a while, washed our hands in the rain water and watched for a break in the clouds.

It did not come.

And it just kept on raining. It turned out two people had brought boots, a raincoat and an umbrella with them to the daycare. They were able to go to the cabin, retrieved our rain gear, make it back to the daycare in the mud and rain and we were on our way to have dinner.

In the Hmong village, everyone eats sitting on the floor. They put mats on the floor, you take your shoes off before entering the house and sit on the floor. For us Americans who are used to sitting on comfy chairs with our feet out in from of us, this was not an easy thing to do. In fact, for some it was right down painful. I never did see a chair in either village we were in. The food was always good and we did enjoy the time with the family. They were gracious and enjoyable hosts.

After the meal, we went back to the cabin to have evening devotions. When we arrived our cabin was full of children and people waiting for us. They had the gas lights on for us and were all sitting on the floor quite and patient. Pastor did the devotion in English, Dang translated to Thai so Suphan could translate to Hmong. As the evening went on the children listened attentively. We taught the children 'This Little Gospel Light of Mine" (in English) and sang it together. The children enjoyed it. No one wanted to leave. It just seemed like they were going to stay all night! We were all tired and needed to get to bed, so to close we all sang the Doxology, in English, in Thai and finally in Hmong.

So with the evening devotions done, we were a tired bunch and ready for a good night sleep. As I looked out the window I was sleeping by, I said, "I want to wake up and see stars out this window tonight". And I did.

On Our Way North

Today is Sunday. We boarded the vans with what we needed to head north. Before the 4 hour drive, we went to church at Concordia Lutheran Church-Pongphet. This building is used as a daycare during the week. Pastor Taweep (pictured below) and other members greeted and welcomed us. The Order of Worship was written in both English and Thai. The beauty of the Liturgy was apparent in this worship. Two languages could worship together and not feel confused or lost. Confession, Absolution, Apostles Creed, Lord's Prayer all spoken in both Thai and English. Pastor Schultz was the guest speaker and it was translated into Thai. We all decided we like it 'Thai' style. While the translation was taking place we had time to meditate on what was said. After the service was over the members of the church had prepared a wonderful dinner of Panang Curry and rice.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SqKQYz3aIDI/AAAAAAAAAJQ/TyRnXfIYAvs/s400/Trip+North+001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378019660947660850" />

Pastor Schultz delivering the sermon and Dang translating into Thai.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SqLpLyS3OtI/AAAAAAAAAL8/_NEBJEvCltw/s400/IMG_0518.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378117293722516178" />

The building where the daycare is located.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SqKQYW_174I/AAAAAAAAAJI/5NXMCSOCNHA/s400/Trip+North+057.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378019653198409602" />

A poster on the wall.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SqKQZQwWVDI/AAAAAAAAAJY/PL9m0BDBytE/s400/Trip+North+002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378019668702680114" />

Time to board the vans and head out. The scenery on the trip included rice fields and cattle grazing by the road. I don't just mean 'by' the road, I mean being herded on the shoulders so they can graze the grass down. Instead of mowers doing the job, cattle do it. We arrived at the Suan Sin Motel in the Tak province, had a wonderful dinner and went to bed in those comfy beds that would not be available the next couple of nights.

We were up early the next morning, anxious and ready to go. The vans would take us to Khlong Lan National Park. There we would be taken to the Hmong Village, Loh Koh. We had to make a stop at a local market to buy food for our stay. A family at the village was hosting us and they would be cooking our meals. The walk through the market was an adventure in itself. There were fresh vegetables, fresh meat (this morning fresh), fresh fish (swimming in a tank fresh), fresh eggs, and fresh things we didn't know existed!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SqKZ5p1LcKI/AAAAAAAAAJg/558n6-kj3z0/s400/Trip+North+058.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378030120794288290" />

These two look so happy!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SqLiYANN7lI/AAAAAAAAAL0/hMS9jwEVtXI/s400/100_0884.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378109807033970258" />

We saw what I called the Hmong Four Wheeler:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SqKafJ2qkeI/AAAAAAAAAJo/I7pyhQBfUB8/s400/Trip+North+008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378030765045617122" />

More on this later.

We arrived at the National Park area and waited for our ride to the village. It turned out we would be in the back of three Isuzu pickups for the next two hours taking an incredible ride through forest scenery that only a handful of foreigners have seen. We were the second group of foreigners to visit the Loh Koh village and the first to stay overnight. The previous group spent about 2 hours in Loh Koh.

So, instead of trying to describe the trip to Loh Koh, I will give the story in pictures as seen from the back of a pickup sitting on a piece of plastic. So here goes.

Loaded up and ready to rumble.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SqLUEwSwECI/AAAAAAAAAKE/8MII3_BErM8/s400/P1020128.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378094083181908002" />

The road looks pretty good...so far.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SqLUDzskMbI/AAAAAAAAAJ0/EHXbPlwLNmY/s400/Trip+North+059.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378094066915619250" />

The scenery is beautiful and lush. When we lived on the farm, I always said we spent three months getting ready for the next nine. All the planting, haying, sprinklers, as well as gardening, yard work, painting and fix up projects, and overnight guest kept everyone busy everyday of the summer. In the midst of the busy summer we had and still have regular family reunions. There are young and old alike in attendance. Last year our family reunion included the newest member of the family, three day old Violet, as well as a 95 year old Aunt. Many times people bring friends. They are welcomed and participate in the activities through out the time together. There have been as few as 40 in attendance and upwards to 70 have attended. Whatever the number, those attending can claim the relationship to one another by a common set of grandparents. Those in attendance have many vocations and occupations. There are farmers, teachers, computer engineers, mechanics, nurses, doctors, homemakers, business owners, students, retirees, and the list could go on and on. We all enjoy the time together and go home filled with good food and memories of many wonderful visits and good times.

As members of the family of God, we are waiting for our family reunion at the second coming of Christ. Just like our earthly families, we did not make the choice to be a member of God’s family. We were made members of His family in our baptism and continue in that family because of the gift of faith. When the time comes for this reunion we will be filled with joy as we feast at the banquet that has been prepared for us. We will gaze upon the glory of the Lord. Revelation 21:23 tell us, “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.” Wow, we won’t even have to try to get the kids to bed at night. It won’t ever be night, no darkness ever again. And we won’t even have to cook for everyone. It is all taken care of.

I look forward to family reunions each year but the reunion we will experience in eternity is beyond imagination. We will experience everlasting joy, the feast, and the Son who made all this possible. Seeing those who have gone before us is a reunion that will never end. An everlasting reunion in the presents of the Savior who gave Himself for our salvation is something to look forward to even more than our summer family reunions.

May the Lord bless your summer as you see family and friends in your travels or as they come to see you. It is a busy time, but also a time to make good memories and get many of those projects done. Summer will be gone all too soon…but we have something even better to look forward to…a place where the Son shines eternally.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/Sp6IBdXKkyI/AAAAAAAAAI4/YDEAArMune0/s400/Reunion+2009+043.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376884563769987874" />

Getting to Know The Thai People

Saturday was Orientation at the LCMS Office. We began with Betsy reading from Romans 8. Reading Scripture always reminds us of what God has done for us in Jesus Christ. What a blessing it is to be a part of His family.

Dennis Denow began with the history of LCMS Missionary work in Thailand. He learned very early that only westerners see lines on the streets and highways and that Thai's regulate by relationships...laws are flexible. It was not his plan to quit his job as a High School counselor to do work in Thailand, but through a series of events and numerous visas he remained in Thailand and taught English in a Karen Village for many years. Language classes are usually the best way to start Mission work. This helps to build relationships with the people and through those relationships you can begin bringing the Gospel to them. The village he worked in did have a story of creation, God dying on a tree and His blood running on the ground. They also told him God has a book with the truth but someone stole it. Dennis was able to begin sharing by saying that he stole that book and has brought it back.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 181px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/Spx7xvNI7AI/AAAAAAAAAHY/9nJTUCO5828/s400/Thailand+001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376308149588913154" />

Christy had served as a deaconess in Thailand for many years. She returned to the United States to care for her Mother and just recently came back to Thailand. She ran House of Living Waters for young girls coming out of prostitution and helped them start a new life. She also helped in establishing the English program.

Concordia Welfare and Education Foundation-Thailand (CWEFT) is the Human Care arm of LCMS in Thailand. The Hmong Project was started by CWEFT to provide disaster relief from land slides. This has created four Hmong projects which include scholarship and student projects to provide theological training for Hmong. Again, building relationships with the people brings opportunities.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 209px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/Spx8A0cFplI/AAAAAAAAAHg/n74_nIVCCPY/s400/Thailand.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376308408691828306" />

Goi had an informative activity on the culture of the Thai people. The one thing I noticed before this and was confirmed in the activity is the Thai people are a very gracious and pleasant people, wanting to please and be helpful. Numerous times we would need some direction around the city and would ask someone standing near us and they would be so gracious in helping us out. The Thai people desire good relationships with all people. If you know their thoughts and values, it helps to build relationships. If your communication is bad, they may laugh, but not in a way that is making fun of you. Time is flexible...being late is normal. They are not run by the clock. They are group oriented, they will wait for you. This includes weddings, classes, and church. Conflicts are taken care of through a third person.

Goi's husband Seth, who teaches English in Bangkok, was there to share some of his experiences with the Thai culture.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/Spx_TE39f1I/AAAAAAAAAHo/ulUwzTDOSGc/s400/Thailand+003.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376312020876230482" />

Here are all of us at the LCMS Center.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SpyAWp_dN1I/AAAAAAAAAHw/G_0IVgKMc54/s400/Thailand+002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376313181891016530" />

We finished the orientation at the LCMS center and went to lunch. After lunch our vans were there to take us to the Grand Palace. About an hour in there was enough. At one time it was the home of the King. The Wat Phra Kaew houses the Emerald Buddha. You must take off your shoes to enter and not point your feet toward the Buddha. Pointing your feet toward anything in Thailand is a sign of disrespect.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SpyH-uHAG8I/AAAAAAAAAH4/X4DcoKFRAkQ/s400/Thailand+008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376321566772566978" />

Just walking around the grounds was too much for my eyes. The buildings are gold and have little mirrors on them. There are statues to keep evil spirits away. So, here are some pictures of what we saw:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SpyIyLoApvI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/r-o5TZtKLM4/s400/Thailand+006.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376322450868971250" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SpyIxQv8htI/AAAAAAAAAII/-ycDyNH9ANA/s400/Thailand+004.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376322435064563410" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SpyIw6n-N8I/AAAAAAAAAIA/X3pBwd0rse4/s400/Thailand+005.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376322429125539778" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SpyKPXTRhoI/AAAAAAAAAIg/QUN75lp6_e0/s400/Thailand+011.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376324051731056258" />

Here is our group just before we left:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SpyJIIkLCpI/AAAAAAAAAIY/o68emJyDVpg/s400/Thailand+009.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376322828004690578" />

Our last sight-seeing stop of the day was the Jim Thompson House. He was a British businessman who started a very lucrative silk business in Thailand. He built a traditional Thai house, putting three houses together. This house was large and made of very dark wood. Remember, Thailand is in the tropics, so you don't need insulation or inside walls. Also on the premises was a shop stocked with Jim Thompson silk clothing and items. We had the opportunity to look around at the beautiful collections which were out of our price range! An interesting note...In 1967 Jim Thompson disappeared in Malaysia, never to be seen or heard from again.

More Sights Around Bangkok

Today us Montana girls (and one guy) were on our own to find our way around this city of 10 million people. (Montana has a total population of 970,00, so we were a bit out of our element) We had a plan and we knew how to get there. On the taxi ride we started to notice electric lines. We commented earlier that conduit was not something that was readily used in shops and establishments around Bangkok. I even noticed an electrical wire hanging down a pole with the ends wrapped in electrical tape.

So, take a look at these pictures: (some of these may be telephone lines too, but still......)
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SpXLV3t_r3I/AAAAAAAAAGg/8BronwG9n7o/s400/Thailand+024.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374425306931113842" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SpXLnjQ7NZI/AAAAAAAAAGo/4rqKGR6mz5w/s400/Thailand+025.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374425610678121874" />

We were never out of power, so this method must work.

And of course, we cannot forget the urban chickens!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SpXZO5Wt7BI/AAAAAAAAAHI/Pe3uSEEZFDA/s400/Thailand+001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374440580274056210" />

After a rigorous day of walking around the city, we were ready for some relaxation. At the JJ Market there was a Fish Spa we had seen earlier and wanted to check out. There is one tank with little piranhas and another where the fish are a bit bigger. You sit down, put your feet in the water and let the fish eat the dead skin off your feet. At first it feels like that tingly feeling you get when your feet go to sleep and they are getting the sensation back. Twenty minutes of that and your feet are refreshed and ready to walk the streets again!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SpXVOCoaZ1I/AAAAAAAAAGw/7e1fVub4Tpk/s400/Thailand+023.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374436167537813330" />

Back to the hotel to eat and get ready for our trip North. That included getting the gifts ready to take. Each of us had things in our suitcases that were purchased in advance to take. It included Huckleberry Jam, Huckleberry Grizzly (Gummi) Bears and Huckleberry Taffy. If you don't already know, huckleberries are a popular wild berry in Montana. We also had postcards of Montana and some trusty Thrivent Crosses.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SpXXgV8f66I/AAAAAAAAAG4/dIVecC_W2qg/s400/Thailand+011.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374438680983235490" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SpXaWunUvBI/AAAAAAAAAHQ/wb5fjWZxv_4/s400/Thailand+012.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374441814341499922" />

Before long it was all organized and packed in suitcases to head North tomorrow. There are walls on both sides and hardly any room to walk. You have to weave in and out of parked cars if you are driving.* At the LCMS center we met Dang, the Business manager of the LCMS World Center and Concordia Welfare and Education Foundation-Thailand, (part of Human Care) Betsy ( a deaconess intern), and some of the other employees. They gave us a tour of the office and let us use the computers.

Later that day we went to the Lutheran Hour Office and met those that make bringing the Gospel to the Thai people possible. It is not called 'The Lutheran Hour' in Thailand but is called Journey Into Light. We toured the studio and viewed a power point on broadcasting the Gospel to the people of Thailand. They have a bookstore with familiar books translated into Thai including Luthers Small Catechism and A Child's Garden of Bible Stories.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SpWB0t2oFsI/AAAAAAAAAFI/NqN0WWHHQFw/s400/Thailand+018.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374344472998450882" />

Around the corner from Journey Into Light we entered the Concordia Gospel Mission. The CGM is where English Classes are taught. They have two teachers at this time and around 20 students. This project is a great opportunity to build relationships with students and opens opportunities to share the gospel.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SpWCgIHqrQI/AAAAAAAAAFQ/JFLb0UIch4s/s400/Thailand+020.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374345218783620354" />

Across the street from CGM is the Luther Institute of Southeast Asia (LISA).
LISA's objectives include the following:

-Provide training for Christian leaders
-Prepare men for the office of Holy Ministry of Word and Sacrament.
-Provide instruction in Lutheran Doctrine as well as topic specific conferences throughout the
year.
-Certify Laymen and Christian ministers as Lutheran Pastors.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SpWC4PJ2fmI/AAAAAAAAAFY/hCDBRLiWijA/s400/Thailand+019.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374345632988692066" />

We had time to head out and do some shopping and site seeing. Our first stop was the JJ Market. We used this time to see what was available and got ideas of what we would like to bring back home with us. Needless to say, the options were endless! After looking around three of us decided to do our Christmas shopping. I cannot believe I completed my shopping in the month of August. Now, if I can just get my displaced luggage from our flight home!

We took a tuk tuk a few blocks to see the tallest building in Bangkok, the Baiyoke Sky Hotel. We rode the elevator up to the 83rd floor to go out on the revolving deck. All you could see from all directions was the city of Bangkok. As you can see, the skyline is not clear. You could only see as far as the smog would let you see.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_UGArWDU8ReU/SpWDhOh8uSI/AAAAAAAAAFo/9DWhvj8W-gc/s400/Thailand+013.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374346337195964706" />

Here we are, ready to go for the tuk tuk ride to Baiyoke Sky Hotel. Five of us left from Missoula and met other team members in Salt Lake City for the rest of the trip to Tokyo and then on to Bangkok. The idea of going to Thailand still seemed surreal, but we knew we were on our way. I was so relaxed on the flights that I slept most of the trip. When we arrived I was well rested and never really experienced jet lag. Everything went well on the flights. We all arrived in Bangkok with our luggage.

On Tuesday morning (August 12) we left the motel to ride the bus to the river. Now this bus was not what you might visualize when you think of municipal buses. This bus had no air conditioning and very old and worn seats. As it turned out, we should have gotten off and changed buses. Our best option at that point was to take a cab to the river. We boarded a boat (river taxi) for a great trip down the river. There were huge barges, speed boats and river taxis along the way. Here is a picture of the barge and the river taxi:

As we continued down the river we saw a variety of buildings. There are everything from beautiful homes to shanties. You see laundry hanging on whatever is available and you see beautiful landscaping. You see people swimming, fishing, taking a bath, washing clothes and even brushing their teeth...all in the dirty river water.

We got off the boat and rode the Sky Train to Lumpunia Park. Lumpunia Park is a beautiful oasis in the middle of the metropolis. There were Monitor Lizards, people feeding the fish and beautiful plants and trees. Today was Mother's Day in Thailand. Mother's Day in Thailand is the Queen's birthday and it is a holiday. Many shops were closed and people had the day off.

We made our way back to the motel on the subway and then a taxi. We walked to The Big C (Thailand's K-Mart) to buy some water. The grocery area was an adventure in itself. The meat is just laying out with no packaging on tables. A common site was a whole chicken (head and feet included) hanging (by it's neck) in the meat section for your viewing pleasure. There was a hind quarter of a pig with the feet still on it. The rice section of the store was larger than the produce section. The produce section was filled with new and interesting things. But you could also find Coke, Pepsi, Oreos and other familiar items. The smells were so different. Some smells I could never identify, and maybe that was good. The raw meat laying out open created a smell that is hard to describe. If you were hungry when you came in the store, those unfamiliar smells made that feeling go away! It seemed that after a while, I lost my sense of smell. Maybe it was the pollution that killed it. But then, maybe it is like living on a dairy farm....after a while you just don't notice anymore.

There were no trash cans around the streets of Bangkok. Trash was laying on the streets and in roadside areas. Trash cans were removed as a precaution to prevent them from being used to hide explosives. After I learned that, seeing all the trash on the streets made me feel healthy and safe!

This past week Jerry served as a delegate to the LCMS Montana District Convention in Billings. It was time to see my Mom and so I took advantage and went a couple hundred more miles to spend a few days visiting her.

As I was driving across Southeastern Montana I couldn't help but look at the landscape, all green and lush. It is such a good thing to see green grass after having 8 years of drought. The prairie has a special place in my heart and provides a beautiful landscape as you drive. Here is one of the scenes on the way back

This is a good example of why Montana is called, "Big Sky Country". Can you see many houses in this picture? My guess is that neighbors are on an average, 5-7 miles apart. Despite distance, everyone still knows what the neighbors are up to. There is never total isolation. The community may be small, but they do depends on each other. And everyone waves when you pass them on the road. A very different culture than most of us are in now.

We are Beggars!

<meta equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;
Here is an article I wrote for the Montana LWML Missive back in February:

“I am a beggar.” Just like those that came to Jesus begging for physical healing, I, too come to Christ begging for healing. I have not suffered any incurable physical disease, but I suffer because of my sin. I cannot in any way take my sin away in and of myself. I have to cry out, “Christ, have mercy.” I confess that I am a poor miserable sinner and beg Christ to have mercy on me. By His grace I am assured once again of the forgiveness that Christ has won for me in His death and resurrection. Because of that, I will have everlasting life.

Jesus Christ has come to me and filled my spiritual needs. But what about physical needs? He has provided those things in abundance. I have a warm home, food on the table every day, clothing to wear, and good water to drink. But what about those in the world who do not? As Christians, we come together to help alleviate the sufferings of others who are hungry, without shelter, are in need of clothing, and medical care. It may seem small to us, but for our brothers and sisters in need, it means the world to them. Because of the mercy Christ has shown to us, we are able to put our faith into action and show mercy to others. The mercy of Christ flows through each of us to those in need.

Montana District LWML is providing an exciting opportunity for our district to help those in need in Thailand. In August 2009, a group will be going to Bangkok to assist in projects at Chiang Mai and Bang Naa Daycare. There may also be an opportunity to travel to the northern part of Thailand and work with the Hmong.

Our Christian life is a life of mercy. In Matthew Harrison’s book, Christ Have Mercy, he brings insight into the words Luther wrote, …”’We are beggars. That is true.’ Luther’s profound biblical insight clearly depicts us as destitute, sinful, unlovable, unrighteous, and incapable—on our own—of effecting anything positive toward God. In short we are beggars. Our salvation must be—start to finish—an act of grace. Yet this is precisely how God desires we come before Him. Jesus said, “I came not to call the righteous, but sinners” (Matthew 9:13) Paul writes, “For God has consigned all to disobedience, that He may have mercy on all.” (Romans 11:32)”*

We are beggars. That is true.

* Matthew Harrison, Christ Have Mercy, Concordia Publishing House. 2008, pg 101

Sourdough Sharing

Our daughter has taken a notion to get a sourdough starter going. After a few not so successful attempts at making sourdough bread, she had a great success. We love to share good things, so when they came for Mothers Day, she brought me a start of her sourdough. I haven't had a lot of time the past few weeks to do much with it, but on Wednesday evening I decided to set a sponge and get this show on the road. Thursday morning I added more flour, some salt and olive oil. I have fresh rosemary growing in a planter on my deck, so it was a perfect opportunity to be adventurous and add that to the dough. The dough was looking great and you could even smell the rosemary.

I checked the dough throughout the day and there was no activity. I decided to have patience, not get in a hurry and let it sit overnight. This morning when I check the dough, low and behold, it had risen. It made a nice sized loaf and before I headed out to work I put it in the oven. Here is the results of my patience:

I had to take the picture quick because I knew Jerry was going to want some while it was warm and sure enough, it didn't take long.

Yep, it was still warm and what was his description? Today the apple blossoms were at their peak. They are just beautiful and smells so good. What is interesting is yesterday it looked like this. All of a sudden, there it was, in full bloom. I was surprised. Three weeks ago I was checking the trees in the yard for buds to make sure they were still alive.

The tree is buzzing with bees.
